EFCC Calls on NANS Leaders to Fight Internet Fraud, Promote Anti-Cybercrime Awareness on Campuses
Abuja, August 20, 2025 – The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ola Olukoyede, has called on leaders of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) to take the lead in combating internet fraud on university campuses across Nigeria.
Olukoyede made the appeal on Wednesday when a delegation of NANS visited the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja for a courtesy call. Speaking through his Chief of Staff, Commander CE Michael Nzekwe, the EFCC boss expressed deep concern about the negative impact of cybercrime on the country’s economy and reputation, both locally and internationally.
“The EFCC cannot do the work alone. We need Nigerians and every stakeholder. As students’ representatives, you are our partners in addressing cybercrime on campuses. You can be our whistleblowers. The trend now is to use cybercriminals to launder money for politically exposed persons.
Let’s look at how to expose these people,” he said. Olukoyede highlighted that the Commission had previously convened a Cybercrime Summit, during which serious concerns were raised about the rapid growth of internet fraud and its implications on Nigeria’s international image. He emphasized the need for collective efforts in tackling this growing menace.
The EFCC chairman urged NANS leaders to take practical steps to create awareness among students about the dangers of cybercrime. He stressed the importance of developing innovative strategies to educate students and youths about the consequences of participating in fraudulent activities, including legal sanctions and societal backlash. According to him, students have a vital role to play in spreading anti-graft messages and encouraging a culture of honesty and accountability among their peers.
“We need your support to ensure that campuses are safe spaces free from cybercrime. Students are influential in their communities, and your active participation can help reshape the narrative and reduce the prevalence of internet fraud,” Olukoyede added.
Earlier in the visit, former National Public Relations Officer of NANS, Comrade Bestman Okereafor, praised Olukoyede for his dedication and tangible achievements in the fight against corruption. He described the EFCC chairman as “a transformative leader and exceptional fighter of corruption in Nigeria.”
“We have always stood with the Commission, and we will continue to support its initiatives. We commend the level of professionalism and transparency you have brought to the system. As partners in progress, we must always speak out and support what you are doing. We will never be a party to mischievous propaganda, injustice, or wrongdoing. We are available to collaborate with you in fighting cybercrime,” Okereafor stated.
The meeting concluded with a commitment from NANS leaders to work closely with the EFCC in spreading anti-cybercrime awareness and encouraging students nationwide to embrace ethical practices in all online activities. The Commission reiterated that collective action and student involvement are essential in curbing cybercrime and restoring Nigeria’s reputation on the global stage.
