The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that 17 political parties have nominated a total of 637 candidates to contest for 68 seats — comprising 6 Chairmen and 62 Councillors — in the upcoming Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections.
INEC has called on Nigerians to scrutinise the list of nominated candidates. Under Section 29(5) of the Electoral Act 2022, any aspirant who participated in party primaries and has reasonable grounds to believe that a candidate’s information is false can challenge the nomination in a Federal High Court.
The final list of candidates will be published on 22nd September 2025, in line with Section 32(1) of the Electoral Act 2022 which requires publication at least 150 days before the election date. This step is also listed as Item 7 in INEC’s timetable and schedule of activities.
