The State Chairmen of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have reaffirmed their full confidence in the National Working Committee (NWC) led by the party’s National Chairman, Dr. Tanimu Turaki, SAN, declaring their unanimous support for the current national leadership at a crucial time for Nigeria’s major opposition party.
The declaration was made during an interactive meeting held on Wednesday, December 10, at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, where the chairmen gathered to review the party’s direction, its internal cohesion, and ongoing efforts toward rebuilding trust among members nationwide.
Representing the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, the Chairman of the PDP State Chairmen’s Forum and Edo State PDP Chairman, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, delivered the collective position of the forum. He said the National Working Committee under Dr. Turaki had demonstrated a level of commitment to internal democracy, discipline, and party restructuring that deserved not only commendation but also the full backing of all loyal stakeholders. According to him, the meeting served as a platform for reaffirming unity at a time when internal stability remains critical for the party’s future electoral relevance.
Dr. Aziegbemi stated that the chairmen were present in Abuja to deliver a clear message that they stand firmly behind Dr. Turaki’s leadership and the direction the NWC is steering the party. He emphasised that while the PDP, like any large political institution, faces challenges, what matters most is the visible dedication of the NWC to uphold the PDP constitution, strengthen its organisational structure, and prepare the party for upcoming electoral battles. He noted that the determination shown by the NWC in recent months reflected a leadership committed to transparency and fairness, which he described as essential for reviving confidence among party members.
The chairmen expressed concern over what they described as destabilising rhetoric and actions by certain individuals or groups seeking to undermine the party for personal interests. They insisted that the PDP must not allow internal disagreements to distract it from its central mission of presenting itself as a credible alternative to Nigerians, especially at a time when governance challenges at the national level continue to deepen. They said unity, discipline, and loyalty must take precedence over personal ambitions if the PDP is to regain power and restore public trust.
Throughout the meeting, several state chairmen commended the recent initiatives introduced by the NWC aimed at strengthening party structures across all levels. These initiatives include renewed efforts to conduct congresses in strict adherence to the constitution, strengthening dispute-resolution mechanisms, and improving communication between stakeholders across states. The chairmen expressed satisfaction with the commitment shown by Dr. Turaki to ensuring that all party processes — from ward congresses to national conventions — reflect the principles of fairness, inclusivity, and transparency that the PDP prides itself on.
Some chairmen also emphasised the need for the PDP to avoid the pitfalls of the past where internal party disputes escalated into major crises that weakened the party’s electoral chances. They urged members to view the rebuilding process not as the responsibility of the NWC alone but as a collective effort that requires cooperation from all party organs, state structures, and grassroots supporters. They warned that allowing internal sabotage or unnecessary pressure on the NWC would only slow down the progress made so far and weaken the party ahead of the next elections.
Dr. Aziegbemi underscored that the PDP must remain focused on the needs and aspirations of the Nigerian people, who he said are looking for a credible opposition with clear ideas on governance, security, job creation, and economic recovery. He said the party must demonstrate seriousness, consistency, and unity if it hopes to convince Nigerians that it is prepared to offer better leadership. According to him, this can only be achieved when constituted organs such as the NWC are allowed the space and independence to perform their duties without undue interference or politicised pressure.
The chairmen stressed that beyond preparing for elections, the PDP must rebuild itself as an institution rooted in democratic practice, consultation, and rule of law. They said the leadership of Dr. Turaki has so far shown commitment to upholding these values and deserves the support of all loyal party members. The NWC was praised for its engagement with state structures, its efforts in resolving lingering disputes, and its renewed outreach to grassroots supporters, which the chairmen said had helped restore confidence in the party’s long-term prospects.
At the end of the meeting, the state chairmen reaffirmed their pledge of loyalty and cooperation with the national leadership. They assured Dr. Turaki that they would work closely with the NWC to strengthen the party from the grassroots to the national level, rebuild party structures, and mobilise support ahead of the next electoral cycle. They described the interactive session as timely, productive, and necessary for reinforcing internal unity.
Although only 27 out of the 36 state chairmen and the FCT chairman were physically present at the meeting, those in attendance stated that their position reflects the overwhelming consensus among PDP leadership across the country. They concluded by expressing optimism that the renewed partnership between the states and the national leadership would position the PDP for greater political success and restore its relevance as a major opposition force in Nigeria.
