Ogoni Re-Entry: NNPC, Tinubu Hail Milestone for Justice, Reconciliation, and Development

 

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has described the re-entry into Ogoniland as a historic step for Nigeria, saying the move goes beyond oil production and represents reconciliation, justice, and renewed national progress.

During the presentation of the Ogoni Consultations Report at the State House in Abuja on Wednesday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu said the decision reflects his administration’s commitment under the Renewed Hope Agenda to build a stronger country, attract responsible investment, and prioritize the well-being of host communities.

The President acknowledged the long years of hardship endured by the Ogoni people, noting that their sacrifices are now being recognized.

“We are not, as a government, taking lightly the years of pain endured in Ogoniland. We declare with conviction that hope is here and is back with us,” President Tinubu said.

The Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd, Engr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari, echoed the President’s remarks, describing the re-entry as proof of Nigeria’s ability to confront its past and build a future of prosperity and justice.

“The re-entry into Ogoniland is not just about oil and gas. It is about justice, healing, and charting a new future for our nation,” Ojulari said.

He added that the project is a practical example of how national development can balance equity, environmental protection, and community inclusion. According to him, the re-entry aligns with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda by strengthening the country, creating conditions for responsible investment, and ensuring host communities share in the benefits.

Ojulari praised the role of the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, who convened a committee that brought all stakeholders together for dialogue. He also commended Professor Don Baridam and other members of the Presidential Committee for their transparent work that produced a report centered on fairness and inclusivity.

He stressed that NNPC Ltd will continue to prioritize community trust by investing in infrastructure, engaging stakeholders, and supporting local businesses. He disclosed that the company has already begun projects such as road construction, infrastructure upgrades, and economic empowerment programs.

“NNPC Ltd is determined to transform Ogoniland from a symbol of conflict into a beacon of reconciliation, renewal, and sustainable progress,” Ojulari said.

In his remarks, the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, described the report as the outcome of transparent and collaborative efforts. Professor Baridam, speaking on behalf of the Committee, thanked President Tinubu for his commitment, noting that trust was rebuilt through consistent dialogue with the Ogoni people.

NNPC Ltd added that the Ogoni re-entry carries a message for the global community, proving that energy development can co-exist with environmental protection and community benefit. By placing local aspirations at the centre, Nigeria is setting an example for how oil operations can be more inclusive and sustainable.

For the country, the milestone signals that true progress can only be achieved through partnership between government, industry, and the people.
