Sadly, some Obidients have tried to blame President Tinubu for the recent killing of an Anambra boy by kidnappers who targeted him for refusing their order to violate his sister sexually. However, such criticism is misplaced and carries ill motives.
The only form of terrorism for which President Tinubu can reasonably be held accountable is foreign terrorism that occurs due to Nigeria's porous borders. Homegrown terrorism, however, is a different matter entirely. Local communities bear significant responsibility.
Homegrown terror can only thrive where there is local support. Please read that again.
Recently, the Governor of Anambra, Professor Charles Soludo, revealed that, according to data collected by security agencies, 99% of kidnappings in Anambra were carried out by people of Igbo origin.
It is extremely difficult for outsiders to infiltrate communities and perpetrate acts of terror without some level of cooperation or buy-in from the local population.
This is why regions with little tolerance for criminal activities experience lower levels of insecurity and terrorism. Take the Southwest as an example. Their intolerance for crime led to the creation of Amotekun, a regional security initiative launched by Southwest Governors with community support.
Since its establishment, Amotekun has received local tips about criminal activity, helping to prevent and combat crime effectively. According to ResearchGate, Amotekun enjoys a favorable rating of over 60% in the Southwest and has contributed to a 29% reduction in crime.
Security is fundamentally local. If communities do not cooperate with security agencies, and if local governments fail to introduce initiatives to address terrorism and crime, the Federal Government can only tackle the symptoms rather than the root causes.
In Northern Nigeria, vigilante groups such as the Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF) work to combat terror and crime. The Southwest has Amotekun. But what do the Southeast and South-South have? While the Southeast has the Eastern Security Network (ESN), questions remain about whether it genuinely protects the people or contributes to insecurity.
Before blaming President Tinubu, communities must look inward and recognize that terror thrives only where there is local support.
The Nigerian Armed Forces are trained to repel foreign threats, and the Police and paramilitary forces are equipped to handle intra-communal crime. However, if communities simply wait for the President to leave Aso Rock and personally expose criminals in their neighborhoods, they will be waiting forever.
