Reno Omokri Blames Peter Obi for Son’s Photo Leak Fallout, Cites Past Attack on Seyi Tinubu
Peter Obi is facing fresh criticism following the recent leak of private photos of his son, Oseloka Obi, which circulated widely on social media this week. While the incident has drawn condemnation from many Nigerians, political commentator Reno Omokri has argued that the former Labour Party presidential candidate must also take responsibility for what he described as “making politicians’ children fair game” in the arena of dirty politics.
Omokri, in a lengthy statement shared on his X handle, strongly condemned the publication of the leaked images, calling it an invasion of privacy and a shameful act that should have no place in a decent society. He urged those who circulated the photos to delete them immediately and appealed to the National Information Technology Development Agency to step in and scrub the images from the internet.
However, beyond his condemnation, Omokri reminded Nigerians of a similar incident earlier this year when Peter Obi himself had made unverified allegations against Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu. According to Omokri, on May 4, 2025, Obi accused Seyi of abducting and attempting to kill Atiku Abubakar Isah, a factional President of the National Association of Nigerian Students. The allegation, which spread quickly on social media, was later proven to be false.
Just four days later, on May 8, Atiku Abubakar Isah issued an apology to Seyi Tinubu, admitting that his claims were politically motivated and untrue. Despite this, Peter Obi has never apologised for publicly amplifying the accusation. Omokri argues that by rushing to smear Seyi without verifying the facts, Obi failed what President Tinubu himself has often described as the “Verify Before You Amplify” principle.
Omokri stressed that Seyi Tinubu, like Oseloka Obi, is a young man with feelings, and he too had to endure the pain of malicious falsehoods. He described Obi’s current outrage over the invasion of his son’s privacy as hypocritical, insisting that the precedent was set when he personally dragged Seyi Tinubu into political mudslinging.
Meanwhile, Oseloka Obi has broken his silence in response to the online circulation of his pictures. In an open statement, he dismissed the rumors as malicious fabrications designed to attack him simply because of his father’s political profile. He explained that he rarely engages on social media and had no desire to respond to gossip, but felt compelled to speak this time because of the scale of misinformation.
Oseloka clarified that he is a professional actor and not a political figure, adding that it is wrong for anyone to interpret his personal life or career choices as political statements. He described the stories about him as “fiction spun from pictures,” stressing that they are distractions from the real issues plaguing Nigeria. He listed insecurity, economic hardship, infrastructure collapse, a struggling healthcare system, and corrupt political leadership as the true crises demanding national attention.
The younger Obi also made clear that his support for his father stems from conviction and shared values, not simply blood ties. He emphasized that Peter Obi has his vote because of his honesty, work ethic, and record, not because he is his father. He concluded by reaffirming his commitment to honesty, hard work, and service to others as guiding principles in his life.
Reno Omokri, however, insists that the damage has already been done and that Peter Obi must acknowledge his role in lowering the bar by targeting Seyi Tinubu earlier this year. In his words, those who shared Oseloka’s private photos “learnt their wickedness” from Obi himself, who set the example by using Seyi in political battles.
The development has reignited conversations around the boundaries of political rivalry in Nigeria and whether children of politicians should ever be dragged into the fray. While many Nigerians agree that Oseloka’s privacy should be respected, others also see Omokri’s criticism as a reminder of the dangers of weaponizing unverified claims in politics.
At the heart of the controversy lies a larger question of accountability. Should politicians and their families be immune from scrutiny, or is it inevitable in a country where politics dominates public life? Omokri’s argument, though controversial, has once again put Peter Obi’s political judgment under the spotlight.
For now, Oseloka Obi’s appeal for Nigerians to focus on the pressing issues facing the nation instead of indulging in gossip may be the most sobering lesson to take away from the saga. At the same time, Reno Omokri’s comments serve as a warning that in the rough-and-tumble of Nigerian politics, actions have consequences—and what a politician sows may eventually return home.
