Peter Obi Reacts to Katsina Killings, Calls for Urgent Action on Insecurity in Nigeria
The former governor of Anambra State and presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has once again decried the worsening insecurity in Nigeria following the recent killings in Katsina State. The tragic incident, which has left the nation in mourning, claimed the lives of more than 50 people, most of whom were innocent worshippers.
Obi described the killings as a horrendous act that highlights the frightening reality of the country’s insecurity crisis. He noted that such tragedies have become too frequent, with citizens losing their lives almost daily in different parts of the country.
According to him, what makes the tragedy even more painful is that Nigerian leaders often treat these deaths as mere numbers, ignoring the human stories behind the statistics.
“Behind every number is a father, a mother, a child, and families whose lives are shattered forever,” Obi said. “The dignity of human life must be restored as a sacred priority in our country. We cannot continue to act as though these needless killings are normal.”
The Labour Party flag bearer stressed that unless Nigeria urgently addresses the root causes of insecurity, the cycle of violence and bloodshed will persist. He emphasized the need for leaders at all levels to treat security as a national emergency, warning that failure to act decisively will only deepen the suffering of the people.
“My heartfelt condolences go to the grieving families, the people and government of Katsina State, and indeed all Nigerians who live in constant fear of these daily tragedies,” Obi added. “May we find the courage to rebuild a nation where the security of lives and property is not a privilege but a right guaranteed to every citizen.”
The attack in Katsina has once again drawn attention to the larger issue of insecurity across Nigeria, particularly in the northern region, where banditry, kidnappings, and terrorist activities have left thousands dead and displaced millions in recent years.
Security experts have often pointed out that poverty, unemployment, weak security infrastructure, and poor governance are some of the major drivers of violence. Obi echoed this perspective in his statement, insisting that Nigeria must tackle insecurity from the root rather than continually managing its symptoms.
The former governor also called for unity and collective responsibility, noting that the fight against insecurity should not be left to government alone. He said Nigerians must demand accountability from leaders and insist on policies that prioritize the safety of citizens.
Concluding his statement, Obi reiterated his message of hope, assuring Nigerians that the current challenges, though difficult, are not insurmountable. “A New Nigeria is POssible,” he affirmed, urging citizens to believe in a future where peace, security, and good governance prevail.
